Last Friday my work colleague Duncan was passing by the vaccination hub at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton. On a whim he asked the security guard at the front door whether they were taking walk-ins who weren’t in any of the pre-determined groups.

The security guard happily waved him in. Duncan had a temperature check, registered with his drivers licence and medicare card and almost before he could say “I often pass out when I have injections” they’d given him the AstraZeneca shot. Simple as that!

He was in and out inside 25 minutes (and that included passing out for around 5 minutes which is apparently quite normal for him when it comes to injections – nothing to do with the fact that it was a COVID shot!).

He got in the van to come back to the kitchen, turned on the 12 noon ABC news and heard about the situation in India and realised...we truly do live in the lucky country.

PS. As a postscript to this editorial, I caught up with Duncan yesterday morning (3^rd May) and he was absolutely fine – no side-effects, other than his pride!
