What’s Your Happiness?

A psychologist friend once told me this strange story…

Once upon a time there were three little girls, all sisters that had been abandoned in a house in the snow, in the middle of nowhere. They had no food or warmth and without help would surely perish. The girls began to cry when…. Poof!... A fairy godmother appeared. She granted each girl one wish. The eldest said, “I want to be the richest person in the world”. The middle sister wished for good health for her entire life and the youngest wished to be happy and with a wave of her wand…. Poof!..... It was done.

Years later the fairy godmother returned to check on the girls. The eldest was now living in a mansion, morbidly obese, lying in a hammock, being fed grapes and fanned by her servant. The middle sister had married a woodcutter, raised 4 healthy children and was surrounded by animals. She lived off the land and was a picture of health. The fairy godmother found the youngest sister sitting in a cold room on the end of a bed with filthy sheets and a tear stained face.

“What’s wrong with you,” demanded the fairy godmother, “I gave you ‘happiness’ why do you sit here like this?”

”I can’t be happy, said the youngest sister. “I don’t know what happiness is.”

And that’s the end of the story. I told you it was strange….. But here‘s what you‘re meant to do with it. Work our what ‘your happy’ is so you can recognise it when you have it.

It might be watching a child play, reading a book, planning a holiday, being creative or playing sport. It can be anything that you identify as ‘your happy’. Now make a list and put it in your notes in your phone.

Now we are all back at work in earnest, don’t forget to take time out to do the things that make you happy.

Here’s to a happy February.
