You know Summers coming to a close when the AFLW competition “kicks” off! It’s great to see the AFL is narrowing the gender gap in a game that is traditionally a male dominated environment.

As a child, it never occurred to me there was a bias between men and women. My mother and father were both doctors and I just assumed everyone’s parents did jobs that attracted equal pay. It was only as I grew older that I came to realise that Mum was only one of two women amongst a cohort of 125 medical students when she studied medicine at Aberdeen university in Scotland and to that effect, was a real ground breaker in her field.

My lack of appreciation of the societal bias between men and women was further enhanced by the fact that I attended a co-educational school for my entire education and as such treated people as people, not genders.

I applaud the elite tennis fraternity for its’ equal approach to the genders at their grandslams and also the way in which the AFL is making inroads on behalf of females in a traditionally male dominated industry.

In an ideal world, there’d be no bias – something we unequivocally observe at Elizabeth Andrews.

Cooking Tip

How do you know if a pineapple is ripe? Gently tug on one of the bottom leaves. If it comes away from the fruit with a gentle tug, the pineapple is ripe.
